Movie Mini-Review

Now that Neve is eight, I so much enjoy curling up on the couch and sharing a bowl of popcorn as we watch movies – old and new – that we both find captivating. Last night we dove into an unapologetic rom-com, chick-flick recently released on Netflix: Falling Inn Love (Cary skipped out because he had a Monday night Irish session at The Moon and Sixpence – otherwise he may have tried to veto our selection!).

The story line was predictably cheesy – girl loses big city job and ditches boyfriend after her ultimatum backfires. She moves across the planet to find replacements, faces obstacles, and ultimately triumphs, but not without some serious, interim hard-to-get play.

The story takes place largely in New Zealand, and scenes throughout are laced with breath-taking ocean views and lush country-side shots that compel me to want to plan our next international excursion.

Highlights include a mixed race couple (though dialogue on cultural sensitivities is generally lacking), some light conversation about real life challenges, and a focus on friendship and fulfilling dreams over selling out to the highest bidder. Overall, Falling Inn Love is a sweet show to share with an eight year-old girl on a rainy weeknight – and Neve woke up still talking about it this morning.
