Labor Day weekend took us to Nashville – a few long, hot days filled with swimming and sunshine, and one inspired night on the town full of music from Live on the Green, party buses, and local beers proved the perfect way to round out a busy summer season.

It was my first time back to Nashville since Neve was a preschooler, and I was struck with the growth, energy, and evolution of the city. The streets bustled with families, students, and music fans from every generation. It reminded me of a mix between Austin (think cowboy boots, honky tonks, and early Taylor Swift covers), Las Vegas (picture parties literally happening in roof-top converted buses carrying bachelorettes up and down music row), and even a hint of Portland (foodies unite!).
We stayed just south of Nashville in the suburb of Brentwood with Cary’s closest childhood friend – it was a sweet opportunity to catch up. We also spent an evening in Bowling Green, KY where Cary lived in the late 1970s and early 80s. A number of Warren Central High School graduates hosted an informal reunion, and Cary blew the crowd away as a special musical guest.

Neve and I flew back to Portland Monday so she’d be rested and ready for her second week of third grade and I could be back in the office after I dropped her off at school this morning. Cary will stay in the Nashville area through the week to play an open mic at the Legendary Kimbros Pickin’ Parlor, a house concert hosted by the Willis Clan , and two Friday-night gigs at Homegrown and the Lost Paddy, respectively. We miss him already but are so excited to see him have this exciting opportunity to showcase his music to new, enthusiastic audiences! Until next time. Cheers!
